Board of Canvassers to consider casino, bridge proposals Monday

LANSING, MI (AP)--   The State Board of Canvassers meets Monday to vote on placing a casino expansion and an international bridge restricting proposal on the November 6 ballot.

The Michigan Supreme Court on Friday overturned an appeals court decision to keep the casino plan off the ballot.

The group Citizens for More Michigan Jobs submitted petitions with enough signatures to seek a constitutional amendment permitting a fourth Detroit casino and seven others statewide.

The canvassers are expected to vote on whether to place the casino issue on the ballot. They'll also consider a proposal requiring a statewide vote before a new international bridge can be built.

The plan is backed by Ambassador Bridge owner Matty Maroun, who wants to add a span to his own bridge from Detroit to Windsor, Ontario.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
