Former MSP commander acquitted of operating under the influence

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI (AP)--   The former commander of the Michigan State Police Post in Gladstone has been acquitted of drunken driving after a three-day trial.

William Smith was arrested after crashing his vehicle in Chippewa County last July.  The Escanaba Daily Press reports a jury found him not guilty Thursday.

The charge was dismissed last year due to a problem with a search warrant for a sample of Smith's blood.  But the case was reopened in November when a different prosecutor took over.

Smith was subsequently demoted to Sergeant and lately has been working at the Gaylord Post downstate.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
