Prelim held for alleged Escanaba torturers

ESCANABA, MI--   An Escanaba couple charged with torturing a teenaged boy heads to court Thursday morning.

A preliminary hearing is set for the boy’s mother, Susan Bardo, 46, and her boyfriend, Carl Pellinen, 47.  The two are charged with first-degree child abuse, first-degree criminal sexual conduct and torture, each punishable by up to life in prison.

Bardo and Pellinen allegedly kept the 15-year-old in an 8x10-foot room made out of tarps and abused him over a four-year period.

A preliminary hearing determines if there’s enough evidence in the case to send it to circuit court.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
