ISHPEMING, MI--   A preliminary hearing is set for an Ishpeming man accused of shooting and killing a family’s dog.

William Huot, 62, says he thought the Weimaraner was a coyote, even though the dog was wearing a yellow reflective vest and orange collar.

Huot is charged with careless discharge of a firearm in the January 12 incident on Cliffs Drive within the Ishpeming city limits.

A preliminary exam is set for February 4 in Ishpeming District Court.

Owners Cori and Dave Mantela say 8-year-old Corby was a lap dog who always aimed to please.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
