Ishpeming man pleads to firearms charge in dog death

Cori and Dave Mantela

ISHPEMING, MI--   An Ishpeming man has pleaded guilty to shooting a family’s dog last month.

William Huot, 62, is charged with careless discharge of a firearm in the January 12 incident on Cliffs Drive in Ishpeming.  He is accused of killing Corby, an 8-year-old Weimaraner who was walking about ten yards ahead of his owners Cori and Dave Mantela.

Huot said he didn’t see the Corby’s yellow vest or orange collar in the low light and thought he was a coyote.

Sentencing is set for March 4 in Ishpeming District Court.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
