Preliminary hearing set for man accused of attempted murder

MANISTIQUE, MI--   A Schoolcraft County man arrested for attempted murder early Tuesday morning has been arraigned in district court. 

Thomas Becks, Jr., 58, of Manistique is accused of trying to slit the throat of Theresa Gorney, 31, of Manistique Monday night.  Gorney suffered a serious laceration to her throat.  She was treated at Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital and released. 

Becks is charged with attempted murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm, and assault with a dangerous weapon.  He faces up to life in prison. 

A preliminary exam is set for August 11.   

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
