Prelim rescheduled for stabbing suspect

HOUGHTON, MI--   A Hubbell man accused of stabbing a woman to death last month appeared in Houghton County District Court Monday for a preliminary exam.

Paul Moilanen, 42, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Marcy Lavigne, 48, of Hubbell and attempted murder in the stabbing of her 14-year-old daughter.

Moilanen’s attorney waived the rule that sets a preliminary hearing date within 14 days of an arrest.  He said he needed more time to collect and review evidence and information.

Moilanen will return to court within 30 days.

He faces up to life in prison if convicted as charged.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
