Competency hearing ordered for McKenzie

ST. IGNACE, MI--   A St. Ignace man accused of shooting and killing his father will undergo an exam to determine his competency.  

Richard Allen McKenzie Jr., 53, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and felony firearms.  He allegedly shot through his 75-year-old father’s house and barn in St. Ignace Township October 24.  The father died of his injuries. 

A preliminary hearing for McKenzie was held Wednesday in Mackinac County District Court, at which time the competency hearing was ordered. 

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
