Former Bell CFO says he was fired because of his age

MARQUETTE, MI--   Bell Hospital’s former chief financial officer is suing his former employer.

ABC10 reports Gerald Messana is citing age discrimination as the reason for the suit against Bell Hospital.  Messana was 54 years old when he was fired in 2013.  He was replaced by 38-year-old Teresa Morrison, who Messana says was less qualified and had less experience.  According to the lawsuit the situation caused him “extreme metal anguish.”

Messana became interim CEO of Bell in October of 2011 while remaining CFO.  He says he was let go “in spite of good work performance.”

Messana is seeking more than $75,000 in damages and lost wages and benefits.  He wants a civil jury trial in federal court.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
