Iron County prosecutor wants Cochran to undergo competency exam

CRYSTAL FALLS, MI--   The prosecutor in the case against Kelly Cochran has filed a motion for a forensic exam to determine if the murder suspect is competent to stand trial.

According to court documents obtained by ABC 10 Cochran was in an Indiana psychiatric facility a month ago.  They say she has admitted to a “level of participation” in the death of Christopher Karl Regan back in 2014.

The documents also indicate Cochran is being investigated in the death of her husband, Jason Cochran, in Lake County, Illinois.  They go on to say “defendant has claimed responsibility for the death of other individuals which would, if true, make her a serial killer”.

Cochran says she wants to represent herself with the help of a public defender.

The motion hearing will be held May 31st in Iron County District Court.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
