IRON MOUNTAIN, MI--   An Ishpeming woman has been sentenced for smothering her two-month-old son.

Nicole Christensen, 37, was accused of asphyxiating her baby by falling asleep next to him after a bout of drinking.  He was found lying on an infant bouncer seat, unresponsive, in August of 2015.  She was charged with involuntary manslaughter and second-degree child abuse in Dickinson County Court.

Christensen was sentenced Wednesday on the manslaughter charge to two years in prison with credit for 231 days already served.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
