Plea goes awry for Schwechel

MARQUETTE, MI--   A plea deal for a Gwinn man charged with having sex with a 12-year-old girl did not go as planned last week.

WLUC-TV says Tayler Schwechel, 18, was expected to plead guilty to two counts of assault with intent to commit sexual penetration.  In exchange, five other counts, including using a computer to commit a crime, would be dropped.

At his circuit court arraignment Friday Schwechel refused to say what he had done to be guilty of the charges, and the hearing was stopped.

There’s no word yet on whether the plea agreement will remain valid or when another hearing might take place.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
