Motions hearing being held Tuesday in lawsuit against MTU

GRAND RAPIDS, MI--   Michigan Technological University officials are asking a judge to dismiss a lawsuit filed against the school by a student expelled for posting on social media in 2015.

Matthew Schultz, 22, of Norway was charged with disturbing the peace after he posted “Gonna shoot all black people… a smile tomorrow” on Yik Yak in November of 2015. He was expelled, and the charge was dismissed the following month.

Schultz sued the school for his expulsion last September.  He’s seeking $75,000 in damages.

A motions hearing is scheduled in U.S. District Court in Grand Rapids Tuesday afternoon. Lawyers for the university want the judge to dismiss the case.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
