Cognition Brewery landlord charged with felonious assault

ISHPEMING, MI--    The owner of Ishpeming’s Mather Inn has been arrested for assaulting an employee at Cognition Brewery.

Robin Baird is accused of grabbing and squeezing the man’s neck and striking his face with a flashlight Monday night. She was charged Wednesday with felonious assault less than murder.

The incident allegedly happened after Baird shut off a generator powering the brewery, which rents space inside the Mather Inn. Electricity to the business was cut off last week after Upper Peninsula Power Company notified Cognition of an unpaid $4,400 bill. Cognition owner Jay Clancey says utility payments go directly to UPPCO, but there is only one account for the Mather Inn building. He says the brewery will be closed until further notice.

Baird and Clancey have been embroiled in legal fights for years.

Baird’s bond is set at $10,000. She must have no contact with anyone at Cognition.

A preliminary hearing is set for June 8.
