Michigan Department of Corrections

MARQUETTE, MI--   A Gwinn man has been sentenced to 25 to 60 years in prison for sexually abusing children and having child pornography.

Brenden Brownell, 20, pleaded guilty in March to five counts of 1st-degree criminal sexual conduct, one count of aggravated child sexually abusive activity, one count of 2nd-degree CSC, two counts of possession of child sexually abusive material, and one count of aggravated possession of child sexually abusive material.

The Marquette County Prosecutor’s Office says Brownell committed the offenses while he was on free on bond, charged with 3rd-degree CSC with a 13-year-old. Officials say he sexually abused two 12-year-olds he had met through a circle of friends and a youth group he was involved in.

Brownell is currently at the Marquette Branch Prison awaiting transfer to Jackson. The earliest date he’ll be eligible for parole is October of 2044.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
