SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— A former teacher at the Sault Area High School and Career Center has been sentenced for sexually assaulting a student.
On September 11 of 2020 the Sault Ste. Marie Police Department received a complaint from a student who said she was assaulted by a teacher while she attended school. He also requested nude photos from her.
After a several-month investigation, Timothy Strader was arrested on three counts of 4th-degree criminal sexual conduct and solicitation of child sexually abusive material. He was convicted on two counts of attempted felonious assault and sentenced to 30 days in jail, 10 months of jail time held in abeyance, and three years of probation. That includes no unsupervised contact with minors under the age of 18.
Police Chief Wesley Bierling points out that the sexual touching of a 16-year-old student by a teacher at school is only a misdemeanor punishable by up to two years in jail.
