Murder sentence handed down to Soo man

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— A Sault Sainte Marie man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for killing his ex-girlfriend.

Jacob McKerchie, 29, was arrested in August of 2021 after 27-year-old Haley Smith was found dead in a Minneapolis Street residence.

McKerchie was charged with homicide-open murder. He pleaded no contest in March to attempted murder and was sentenced Tuesday in 50^th Circuit Court in Sault Ste. Marie.

McKerchie will be eligible for parole in 22 years and 6 months.
