Murder sentence handed down to Soo man

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— A Sault Sainte Marie man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for killing his ex-girlfriend.

Jacob McKerchie, 29, was arrested in August of 2021 after 27-year-old Haley Smith was found dead in a Minneapolis Street residence.

McKerchie was charged with homicide-open murder. He pleaded no contest in March to attempted murder and was sentenced Tuesday in 50th Circuit Court in Sault Ste. Marie.

McKerchie will be eligible for parole in 22 years and 6 months.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
