Former undersheriff sentenced for OWI in Traverse City

TRAVERSE CITY, MI— Houghton County’s former undersheriff was sentenced in Grand Traverse County this week on a drunk driving charge.

Kevin Coppo was arrested March 3 in Traverse City. He allegedly drove a truck owned by the Houghton County Sheriff’s Department into a parked vehicle in the Great Wolf Lodge parking lot.

Coppo pleaded guilty in June to operating under the influence of liquor with a blood-alcohol content greater than 0.17 and failure to report an accident. Failure to stop after a collision was dropped.

Coppo was sentenced to 18 months’ probation and $1,225 in fines and costs.

He resigned from the Houghton County Sheriff's Office in May.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
