Suspect in L'Anse gas station death, fire arraigned

BARAGA, MI— An Illinois man accused of crashing a semi into gas pumps and killing a man in L’Anse last week has been arraigned in Baraga County District Court.

Duwaun Johnson, 22, of University Park is charged with one count of operating while intoxicated, causing death. It’s punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

He was released on a $100,000 surety bond. Johnson is allowed to leave Michigan, but must return for a probable cause conference on November 1st. A preliminary exam is set for November 8th.

The crash also started a fire that severely damaged the Holiday gas station and injured a worker.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
