Prisoner convicted of assaulting correctional officers

Michigan Department of Corrections

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— A former prisoner of the Chippewa Correctional Facility has been found guilty of assaulting two corrections officers.

In January of 2021, Kalvin Washington, 50, made verbal threats to kill an officer in the prison. When the officer radioed for backup, Washington punched him in the face. A second officer tried to restrain Washington and was punched in the face, as well. Other COs responded and got Washington under control.

He was charged with two counts of assault on a prison employee and for being a habitual offender, 2nd offense. A jury convicted Washington on the charges Thursday in Chippewa County Circuit Court. He’s set to be sentenced on May 23rd.

Chippewa County Prosecutor Robert Stratton says corrections officers need to know assaults on them won’t be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
