Suspect in L'Anse gas station death headed to circuit court

BARAGA, MI— An Illinois man whose truck killed one man and injured another at a Baraga County gas station has been bound over to circuit court.

Dawaun Johnson, 23, is charged with operating while intoxicated – causing death, operating while intoxicated – causing serious injury, and alcohol-open container in vehicle.

On October 14, Johnson’s truck hit pumps at the Holiday gas station in L’Anse. The crash killed a man who was filling his vehicle, injured an employee, and started a fire.

At a preliminary exam Tuesday, the judge ordered Johnson’s case over to circuit court. No further hearings have yet been scheduled.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
