Kingsford man receives up to 35 years in prison for sexual assault of child

IRON MOUNTAIN, MI— A Kingsford man has been sentenced for sexually assaulting a 7-year-old girl.

Justin Harvala, 34, was convicted of second-degree criminal sexual conduct and for being a habitual offender, fourth offense, in March. He was sentenced in Dickinson County Circuit Court Monday to 142 months to 35 years in prison.

The assault happened in February of 2021 at the victim’s home. It was captured on a "nannycam" while her mother was in another room. The mother immediately confronted Harvala, told him to leave, and contacted police.

The Michigan Attorney General’s Office assisted in the case.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
