Pickford man to spend more than 7 years in prison for sexual abuse of a minor

MARQUETTE, MI— A Chippewa County man has been sentenced in federal court for sexually abusing a minor.

U.S. District Judge Paul Maloney sentenced Clifford Sutter of Pickford to 87 months in prison. Sutter was accused of having sexual contact with the minor between 2018 and 2022, starting when the child was 10 years old. As part of his plea, Sutter admitted to sexually abusing the victim when they were 12 years old.

Judge Maloney also ordered Sutter to spend 15 years on supervised release after his confinement.

The abuse happened on land belonging to the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.

The FBI, Sault Tribal Police Department, and Michigan State Police investigated the case.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
