Kreider to spend up to 45 years in prison on murder charge

Houghton County Sheriff's Office

HOUGHTON, MI— A Houghton man has been sentenced to 15 to 45 years in prison in the beating death of a L’Anse man last year.

Luke Kreider, 20, was initially charged with homicide-open murder in the killing of Caleb Lynum, 24, last September.

Kreider entered into a plea agreement in June that lowered the charge to second-degree murder. A different case in which he was charged with criminal sexual conduct was also dropped as part of the deal.

The incident happened at the Arbor Way townhouses in Houghton. Kreider was arrested for assault with intent to do great bodily harm, then charged with murder when Lynum died of his injuries.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
