Former Marquette Diocese priest convicted of child sexually abusive activity

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— A former Catholic priest was convicted by a Chippewa County jury Thursday of child sexually abusive activity.

Aaron Nowicki, 49, of Cheboygan was arrested in an August 2021 child trafficking sting. He and two others were netted in the operation conducted by the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office, Sault Ste. Marie Police Department, and Soo Tribal Police.

Officials went on the internet to locate adults who wanted to have sex with children. Nowicki thought he was chatting with a 15-year-old boy. He was arrested when he arrived at a Soo hotel to meet up with the boy.

A sentencing date has not yet been set.

Nowicki resigned from the Diocese of Marquette in 2019 due to allegations of sexual misconduct.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
