New prosecutor appointed in Houghton County

HOUGHTON, MI— Houghton County has a new prosecutor.

12th Circuit Court Judge Brittany Bulleit has appointed Marquette Native Dan Helmer to the position.

Helmer has been an assistant prosecutor in Kent County since his 2011 graduation from Cooley Law School. He replaces former Hancock Mayor Paul LaBine, who accepted the job in July but resigned at the end of September, leaving the office empty of attorneys.

Helmer says his immediate priority will be to fill two assistant prosecutor positions. He’s looking to the community for ideas on who would be right for the jobs.

Helmer starts on December 4th. He’ll fill the remainder of the term, which ends next year, and run for the seat in next year’s general election.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
