Illinois man pleads in L'Anse gas station crash case

BARAGA, MI— A suspect charged with crashing a semi into a L’Anse gas station, killing one man and injuring another in 2022, has entered into a plea agreement.

Dawaun Johnson, 24, was originally charged with operating while intoxicated-causing death, operating while intoxicated-causing serious injury, and alcohol-open container in vehicle.

This week, Johnson pleaded guilty to operating while intoxicated-causing death. The other two charges were dismissed.

Johnson faces up to 15 years in prison. A sentencing date has not yet been set.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
