Prelim scheduled for suspects in Hancock homicide

HOUGHTON, MI— A preliminary exam has been set for two people in connection with the December shooting death of a Hancock Township man.

Alvin Kempainen, 87, was found dead of a gunshot wound in his house on Salo Road. Arrested were Jacob Kempainen, 21, and Margaret Kempainen, 50, of Harland, Wisconsin.

Both are charged with homicide-open murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Jacob Kempainen is also charged with felony firearms. Police have identified him as the shooter.

Both underwent competency exams earlier this year and were found competent to stand trial.

The preliminary hearing is set for May 31st in Houghton District Court.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
