Man sentenced for slamming semi into L'Anse gas station, killing one and injuring another

BARAGA, MI— The man whose semi crashed into a L’Anse gas station—killing one person—has been sentenced.

Dawaun Johnson, 24, received 15 years in prison. He was initially charged with operating while intoxicated-causing death, operating while intoxicated-causing serious injury, and alcohol-open container in vehicle. In March, Johnson pleaded guilty to operating while intoxicated-causing death. The other two charges were dismissed.

The incident happened in October of 2022. Johnson’s truck hit pumps at the Holiday gas station in L’Anse. The crash killed a man who was filling his vehicle, injured an employee, and started a fire.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
