BARAGA, MI— The man whose semi crashed into a L’Anse gas station—killing one person—has been sentenced.
Dawaun Johnson, 24, received 15 years in prison. He was initially charged with operating while intoxicated-causing death, operating while intoxicated-causing serious injury, and alcohol-open container in vehicle. In March, Johnson pleaded guilty to operating while intoxicated-causing death. The other two charges were dismissed.
The incident happened in October of 2022. Johnson’s truck hit pumps at the Holiday gas station in L’Anse. The crash killed a man who was filling his vehicle, injured an employee, and started a fire.
