Soo man sentenced for sexually assaulting granddaughter

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— A Sault Sainte Marie man will spend between 71 months and 15 years in prison for molesting his granddaughter.

Joseph Nolan, Jr., 85, was sentenced Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to second-degree criminal sexual conduct and two counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Department began investigating Nolan after a mandatory reporter stepped forward.

The victim told police her grandfather had sexually assaulted her from the time she was 10 until she was a junior in high school. She finally told a counselor because her mental health had deteriorated significantly because of the abuse.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
