Downstate man sentenced for driving through closed crash scene in Mackinac County

MACKINAC COUNTY, MI— A man who drove recklessly through the closed scene of an accident in Mackinac County in August has been sentenced.

St. Ignace Fire and Rescue had shut down US-2 between Brevort Lake Road and Lake Head Road following a crash between two vehicles and a semi. Traffic was stopped and waiting for officers to clear the area when a vehicle went around the lines of cars and sped through the crash scene.

William Shigwadja, 45, pleaded in September to 4th-degree fleeing a police officer. He was sentenced in Mackinac County Circuit Court Tuesday to 12 months in jail with credit for 73 days already served.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
