MSHS embezzlement suspect sentenced

MARQUETTE, MI— A Marquette woman charged with embezzling from Marquette Senior High School has been sentenced.

Stacey Kangas, 45, was the former MSHS athletic secretary. She pleaded no contest in December to embezzlement, agent or trustee—$20,000 or more but less than $50,000. A charge of embezzlement—$100,000 or more was dropped.

Kangas was given 90 days in jail and three years of probation.

A restitution hearing has yet to be scheduled. It will determine how much Kangas will have to pay the school.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
