Houghton Circuit Court sets trial dates for duo accused of murdering 87-year-old man

HOUGHTON, MI— Trial dates have been set for a mother and son accused of murder in Houghton County.

Alvin Kempainen, 87, was found dead of a gunshot wound in his Hancock Township home in December of 2023. Arrested were Jacob Kempainen, 21, and Margaret Kempainen, 51, of Harland, Wisconsin.

Both are charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Jacob Kempainen is also charged with felony firearms. He was identified as the shooter

Alvin Kempainen is Jacob’s grandfather and Margaret’s father-in-law.

At a pretrial conference last week, the court set Jacob Kempainen’s trial for late January of next year. Margaret Kempainen’s trial will likely be held in November.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
