Former Lake Linden DPW employee sentenced for stealing gas key fob

HOUGHTON, MI— A Lake Linden man has been sentenced after he agreed to a plea deal for stealing gasoline.

Ronald Schmitt, 71, retired from the Lake Linden Department of Public Works in 2012. He was accused of keeping a fuel key fob and using it for his personal vehicles after he left the DPW.

Schmitt was charged in January with using a computer to commit a crime, larceny-greater than $1,000 but less than $20,000, and stealing/retaining a financial transaction device without consent. He pleaded guilty to larceny between $200 and $1,000. The other charges were dropped.

Schmitt was sentenced last week to six months of probation and $29,813.97 in fines and restitution. He was also given a suspended 90-day jail sentence, which he will not have to serve if he complies with the terms of his probation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
