Gogebic County man charged in last week's fatal crash in Marenisco Township

IRONWOOD, MI— A Marenisco man has been arraigned on charges in connection with a fatal crash in Gogebic County last week.

Last Wednesday around 11:20 p.m., a vehicle containing three people was southbound on M-64 in Marenisco Township when it left the road and rolled over.

The front passenger, a 45-year-old Bessemer woman, was ejected and died at the scene. The driver, identified as 57-year-old Brian Berquist, and a rear passenger suffered minor injuries.

Berquist was arraigned Friday on two counts of operating while intoxicated, causing death and one count of manslaughter. He remains lodged in the Gogebic County Jail on a $50,000 cash bond.

A probable cause conference is set for April 8 and a preliminary exam for April 23.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
