GRAND RAPIDS, MI (AP)— A Grand Rapids judge declared a mistrial after the jury couldn’t reach a unanimous verdict in the trial of a police officer who shot a Black man following a traffic stop in 2022.

Christopher Schurr, who is charged with second-degree murder, could face another trial. The prosecutor hasn't decided.

Patrick Lyoya was lying face down underneath Schurr when the officer shot the 26-year-old in the back of the head. Schurr’s attorneys argued he acted in self-defense after Lyoya resisted arrest.

The shooting sparked weeks of protest in Grand Rapids.
