MARQUETTE, MI— A former associate vice president and dean of students at NMU is suing the university for age and sex discrimination.
Christine Greer, 68, filed the suit June 30. She claims she received excellent performance reviews for years until Brock Tessman took over as president of Northern in 2023. Greer says Tessman seemed to value younger, less-experienced administrators over older ones, and also seemed to value men over women.
The suit claims Tessman shifted her responsibilities to a younger, less-qualified man. Greer says she told Tessman the man shouldn’t get an associate vice president position equal to hers, and that several women had more experience and should have been considered for the job.
Greer says Tessman continued to devalue her position until August 2024, when she was fired for performance issues.
The suit says Greer is suing for past and future compensation, the value of lost benefits, emotional distress, and loss of reputation.
Tessman will take over as president of Montana State University in July.
