Woman sentenced for vandalizing MTU 9/11 memorial

HOUGHTON, MI— A former Michigan Tech student charged with taking items from a 9/11 memorial has been sentenced.

Avery Lawrence pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of malicious destruction of a memorial. She was accused of stealing hundreds of American flags and a number of signs honoring those who died in the 9/11 attacks.

Lawrence was sentenced last week to 12 months of probation and 15 days of community service. She must also pay $583 in restitution.

As part of her probation, Lawrence was ordered to refrain from using drugs and alcohol and must stay away from Tech’s campus.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
