Federal jury convicts man in L'Anse Reservation stabbing

L'ANSE, MI— A L’Anse man has been convicted by a federal jury of stabbing another man in the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community.

Kyle Dean, 45, was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and assault resulting in serious bodily injury.

In January of 2024, he went to the victim’s house on the L’Anse Reservation, got into a fist fight, then stabbed the victim nearly a dozen times. Testimony at trial in Marquette indicated the victim would have died from his injuries if it weren’t for the efforts of first responders and doctors at Baraga County Memorial Hospital and UPHS-Marquette.

Dean will be sentenced in 2026.

The FBI, Michigan State Police, Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Tribal Police, and Village of L’Anse Police investigated the case.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
