Jury finds WI man guilty of drug-related charges stemming from 2025 arrest in Wakefield

BESSEMER, MI— A Wisconsin man was convicted of a number of drug offenses in Gogebic County following a two-day trial last week.

Erick Shutte, 56, of High Bridge was found guilty of possession with intent to deliver meth, conspiracy to deliver meth, and possession of meth within one thousand feet of a public park.

In July of last year, a vehicle driven by Shutte was stopped in Wakefield for a traffic violation and on suspicion of transporting drugs from Duluth. The owner of the car, Dalani Leyva, was asleep in the back seat. She was being tracked by the Gogebic-Iron Narcotics Team for transporting meth from Minnesota to the Ontonagon area.

After an alert by K-9 Debwe, officers found meth and a torch on Shutte. More meth was found on Leyva, along with a list of names and phone numbers. Baggies containing more meth, drug paraphernalia, and a glass smoking device were also found in the vehicle.

Leyva was sentenced to prison, then testified against Shutte at his trial.

Sentencing will be held within 30 days.
