Sentence handed down for Gwinn man who shot at residence in 2025

MARQUETTE, MI— A Gwinn man has been sentenced for shooting the windows out of a West Branch Township vehicle in January of 2025.

Jeffrey Johnson was arrested for drunk driving after he crashed his truck. Investigation revealed that before the crash, he had fired a rifle at a residence and shot out the front and back windows of a vehicle. The rifle was found in a bush near the crash site.

Johnson pleaded no contest to discharge of a firearm in or at a building, discharge of a firearm from a vehicle, and malicious destruction of property between $1,000 and $20,000. Three felony firearms charges were dismissed.

Johnson was sentenced last week to 3 to 10 years in prison with credit for 432 days already served.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
