Redford woman sentenced for furnishing contraband to a prisoner

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— A woman who was arrested for trying to smuggle drugs into the Chippewa Correctional Facility has been sentenced to 180 days in jail.

Frances Ramirez-Huerta, 41, of downstate Redford was taken into custody January 11 when officers discovered she had given an inmate items that were concealed in her waistband. They found 140 suboxone strips, 7 grams of marijuana flower, and two SIM cards.

She pleaded guilty in February to furnishing contraband to a prisoner in prison. A second charge of furnishing contraband and a charge of delivery/ manufacture of Schedule 1, 2, or 3 controlled substances were dropped.

Ramirez-Huerta was given credit for 4 days in jail and must serve a year of probation when she’s released.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
