Jacob Kempainen to spend up to 50 years in prison for murdering grandfather

HOUGHTON, MI— A Hancock man has been sentenced for shooting and killing his grandfather.

Jacob Kempainen and his mother Margaret were arrested in 2023 after 87-year-old Alvin Kempainen was found dead of a gunshot wound in his home.

Jacob was identified as the shooter. He was originally charged with two counts of open murder and felony firearms, but pleaded guilty in December to second-degree murder.

Kempainen was sentenced Monday to 15-50 years in prison with credit for 837 days already served.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
