Messages from Houghton County man sentenced for assault called 'unhinged'

HOUGHTON, MI— A Houghton County man who sent hundreds of texts to a woman while he was in jail has been sentenced for assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder.

The case stems from August of last year, when George Mendivil, 26, was also charged with first-degree home invasion and domestic violence.

During his sentencing hearing Friday, Assistant Prosecutor Hillary Baker said Mendivil manipulated people to get what he wanted. When he was jailed for violating his probation, he used devices at the jail to send hundreds of messages to a woman. Baker said the messages from just one of the days were “unhinged.”

Mendivil was sentenced to 57 months to 10 years in prison. He’ll serve that sentence concurrently with another sentence of 6-20 years for first-degree home invasion in a different case.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
