Former Soo Little League president sentenced for embezzling from the league

Matthew Hudecek

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— The former president, treasurer, and coach of Soo Area Little League has been sentenced for taking money from the nonprofit.

Matthew Hudecek, 48, pleaded guilty to embezzlement by an agent/trustee of $1,000 or more but less than $20,000.

From 2022 to 2024, Hudecek took more than $46,000 from the organization. Michigan State Police say he deposited Little League funds into his personal bank account, forged the signatures of other board members on checks that he put into his bank account, and established a PayPal account that directed payments intended for the organization into his personal account.

Hudecek was sentenced Tuesday to 11 months in jail, the maximum term under his sentencing guidelines.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
