Prelim set for alleged Ishpeming killer

MARQUETTE, MI--   A preliminary hearing is set for an Ishpeming man accused of shooting and killing his roommate after an argument last week.

Jack Carpenter, 52, allegedly shot David Meyer, 29, with a handgun in a house on North Second Street Friday afternoon.  Officials say Carpenter then threatened a witness to the shooting and prevented the man from leaving the house.  The witness eventually escaped and contacted police.

Carpenter is charged with homicide—open murder, unlawful imprisonment, assault with a dangerous weapon, and a felony firearms charge.  His preliminary exam is scheduled for June 21 in Marquette District Court.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
