Charges against alleged underwear thief amended

MARQUETTE, MI--   Police have amended charges against a Marquette County man accused of stealing women’s underwear and swimsuits from area camps.

Officials say two of the original misdemeanor charges of larceny between $200 and $1,000 against William Joseph Miller, 48, of Witch Lake now include notices of being a second or subsequent offense.  That raises the charges to felony status, punishable by up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine for each count.  The third count—breaking and entering a vehicle to steal property less than $200—remains a misdemeanor punishable by up to 93 days in jail and a $500 fine.

A preliminary exam is set for Tuesday in Marquette District Court.  Miller remains lodged in the Marquette County Jail on a $15,000 cash bond.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
