Law enforcement warns about new computer virus

UNDATED - Marquette City Police are warning area residents about a new computer scam.

Officials say the FBI has been investigating the virus ‘Reveton ransomware’ which is designed to extort money from its victims.

Reveton is described as ‘drive-by’ malware because it can install itself when users click on a compromised website. Many other viruses active when users open a file or attachment.

Several cases have been reported in the area, though police say they have not received reports of any lost funds.

For more information, visit the FBI website – at fbi.com - or the Internet Crime Complaint Center website at ic3.gov.
