Person of interest identified in bomb threats case

MARQUETTE COUNTY, MI--   Michigan State Police have a person of interest in connection with a series of bomb threats made in Marquette County Friday.

North Star Academy was evacuated Friday morning and students sent home after a threat was called in.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Department says the Michigan State Police Bomb Squad investigated a backpack left at Sawyer International Airport.  They found it full of camping gear and don’t believe it was linked to the bomb threat called in there.

The squad also investigated a package left in a bathroom at the Sawyer Medical Center, which officials say was made to replicate an explosive device.  The package was removed and disrupted by a robot with a water charge.

Police say threats were also made against Marquette General Hospital and Northern Michigan University on Friday.  Officials believe one person is connected to all five.

The incidents remain under investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
