Trial set for snowmobiler accused of running over Marquette man

ESCANABA, MI--   A trial date has been set for a Delta County man accused of hitting a Marquette man with his snowmobile on Garden Bay last January.

Douglas Barbeau, 27, of Garden is accused of striking a tip-up set by the 21-year-old victim, who was ice fishing.  After the Marquette man yelled, Barbeau allegedly came around again and struck him, breaking both his legs.

Police later found a snowmobile matching a description given by witnesses in the woods near Barbeau’s home.

Barbeau is charged with assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder—punishable by up to ten years in prison—and failure to stop at the scene of an accident causing serious impairment or death—a five-year felony.

A three-day trial is set for December 18 through 20 in Delta County Circuit Court.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
